The New Foyer of Galerie der Gegenwart
The redesigned foyer of Galerie der Gegenwart at Hamburger Kunsthalle was conceived as an inclusive space, where museum visitors are offered certain features free of charge. The goal was to create an inviting atmosphere where visitors could relax, explore, and engage with the museum’s content and its library, while also providing practical amenities such as Wi-Fi hotspots, phone charging stations, lockers, and restrooms. Such approach fulfills one of Kunsthalle’s social missions, which is reflected in the greater accessibility of cultural content to the wider public.
The furniture, either custom-made or specifically restored, reflects the architectural vision of Oswald Mathias Ungers. The concept also references the former Federal Executive Council (SIV) building in Belgrade, Serbia, while the design intentionally integrates a color palette that evokes a sense of openness and accessibility. This project bridges past and present, creating a welcoming space that serves both the museum’s mission and the diverse needs of its visitors.
